Desktop client for Linux

Which version do I need?

The client is built per distribution and per release. Therefore, choose the repository that matches both the distribution and the version you are running: each package is built against the libraries of exactly that release. Installing a package for a newer release on an older distribution almost always leads to dependency errors, and the other way around you will miss updates.

Is your distribution listed by name on this page, so Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora or openSUSE? Then always use the repository of that distribution and the release you are running. The explanation below about derived distributions does not apply to you in that case: if you run Ubuntu 24.04, choose the Ubuntu 24.04 repository and not the Debian one.

Is your distribution not listed? Many distributions are derived from Debian, Ubuntu or Fedora and use the same packages. If you run such a derivative, choose the repository of the distribution it is based on. Linux Mint 22.x, for example, is based on Ubuntu 24.04 and therefore uses the Ubuntu 24.04 repository, while LMDE is based on Debian and needs the Debian repository. Make sure you choose the correct underlying release: what matters is the version of the base distribution, not the version number of the derivative.

Not sure which distribution and release you are running, or what it is based on? Then check /etc/os-release. The ID field names the distribution, VERSION_ID the release number (for example 24.04) and ID_LIKE the base distribution a derivative builds on.

cat /etc/os-release

On a derived distribution, VERSION_ID belongs to the derivative itself and not to the base distribution. The release number of the base is usually not included: for that you will only find a codename in UBUNTU_CODENAME or VERSION_CODENAME. That codename belongs to a fixed release, such as noble for Ubuntu 24.04 and trixie for Debian 13. On Linux Mint you can also look up the underlying Ubuntu release directly in /etc/upstream-release/lsb-release. If you are still unsure, use the table below.

Your distribution Use the repository of
Linux Mint 22.x, Pop!_OS 24.04, Zorin OS 18, elementary OS 8, KDE neon Ubuntu 24.04
Linux Mint 23.x, Pop!_OS 26.04, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Linux Mint Edge Ubuntu 26.04
LMDE, MX Linux, Devuan, Raspberry Pi OS, Kali Linux, Parrot OS Debian 13
Nobara, Ultramarine Linux, Fedora-spins (KDE, Xfce, Silverblue) Fedora 44
RHEL, Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux, CentOS Stream, openSUSE Leap Fedora 44 or openSUSE Tumbleweed (untested, depends on the available libraries)

Also pay attention to your processor architecture. The labels on each repository show whether packages are available for amd64 (x86_64) and arm64 (aarch64). The following commands show which architecture you are running:

uname -m
dpkg --print-architecture

Is your distribution or base distribution not listed, as with Arch Linux, Manjaro, EndeavourOS, Gentoo, Alpine or NixOS? Then use the AppImage below: it works independently of the package manager on almost any distribution. The same applies if a repository does not work for you, for example because of dependency errors or because your release differs slightly from the base distribution: the AppImage is then the simplest solution. If you prefer a native build, you can build the client yourself from the source code at the bottom of this page.

AppImage amd64

You can download a directly executable AppImage here:

stack-v6.0.3-20260619-x86_64.AppImage

After downloading, you can make the AppImage executable with:

chmod +x stack-v6.0.3-20260619-x86_64.AppImage

And then start it with:

./stack-v6.0.3-20260619-x86_64.AppImage

Ubuntu 26.04 amd64 arm64

Run the following command to add the client repository to your OS:

echo "deb [arch=$(dpkg --print-architecture) signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/stack-client.gpg] https://filehosting-client.transip.nl/packages/stack-ubuntu-26.04/ main client" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/stack-client.list

Next, you will need to add our STACK client repository key to apt. Be aware that the owner of the key can distribute updates, packages and repositories that your system will trust (more information). To add the key and load the repository, run the following commands:

sudo wget -O /usr/share/keyrings/stack-client.gpg https://filehosting-client.transip.nl/stack-client.gpg
sudo apt-get update

Install the client itself by running the following command:

sudo apt-get install stack-client

Ubuntu 24.04 amd64

Run the following command to add the client repository to your OS:

echo "deb [arch=$(dpkg --print-architecture) signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/transip-stack.gpg] https://filehosting-client.transip.nl/packages/stack-ubuntu-24.04/ main client" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/stack-client.list

Next, you will need to add our STACK client repository key to apt. Be aware that the owner of the key can distribute updates, packages and repositories that your system will trust (more information). To add the key and load the repository, run the following commands:

sudo wget -O /usr/share/keyrings/transip-stack.gpg https://filehosting-client.transip.nl/transip-stack.gpg
sudo apt-get update

Install the client itself by running the following command:

sudo apt-get install stack-client

Ubuntu 22.04 amd64

Run the following command to add the client repository to your OS:

echo "deb [arch=$(dpkg --print-architecture) signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/transip-stack.gpg] https://filehosting-client.transip.nl/packages/stack-ubuntu-22.04/ ./" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/stack-client.list

Next, you will need to add our STACK client repository key to apt. Be aware that the owner of the key can distribute updates, packages and repositories that your system will trust (more information). To add the key and load the repository, run the following commands:
